Week 4 of April was all about launching Arborlands’ web presence. I was in a mad dash to ensure that the site and my first Twitter post were on Arbor Day, which was April 30th.
Hosting Decision
I decided to host the site with WordPress because I had worked with it before and didn’t want to hassle with ftp publishing and setting up my own https certificate. On top of that, WordPress has a built-in login system that allows people to respond to Arborland’s posts, which I love.
The drawback with using an existing platform is that you don’t get full control over the layout of the site.
By spending just a bit more and getting WordPress’ premium package, you can fully edit the CSS (Cascading Style Sheet) which determines the look and feel of the website. WordPress has a lot of it’s own CSS in the background, so if you are very exacting about what you want, you will have to find the native styles using your browser’s developer tools (usually F12) and then override them.
Completing all the HTML and CSS design took me several days, but the work was worth not having to administer the infrastructure of a website. After all, I’m here to design a video game, not a website😄. And I am pleased that I was able to get the look I wanted, especially for the front page.
Social Media Presence
Beyond the site, Arborlands also has social media presence on Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube so you can follow the development on whichever you use most often!
I am most active on Twitter and you can view the twitter feed on the Arborlands home page.
That was the last week of April. May will be Arborlands’ first full month on the net. Thanks for reading!
